The Origin of the EZ Turbo Charcoal Stove

The year was 2007, the global price of crude oil skyrocketed to a whopping 100 USD a barrel. An exponential rise in the cost of living followed with a surge in LPG cylinder prices, leaving the masses in a dire situation to manage their daily lives. Most of the households turned to using wood as a lower cost cooking fuel to LP Gas. However, the use of wood stoves has been known to be responsible for several respiratory health issues, due to excessive smoke and degradation of the environment by felling of trees.
Seeing this dilemma unfold and an immediate need to solve this social issue, Riyad Ismail, a part time innovator conducted research in to alternate cooking stove technology and developed the EZ Turbo Charcoal Stove.

Not Just a Cheaper Alternative

This revolutionary Stove was not only a cheaper alternative to use of LPG or kerosene for cooking, but was a user-friendly and safe alternative to use of wood stoves. The Stove was awarded a patent by the National Intellectual Property Office of Sri Lanka recognizing its innovation and novelty in the field of technology.

Such advantages propelled the Stove as the preferred cooking option among thousands of households, and sold close to 100,000 stoves during the period of the gas crisis.

An Award Winning Innovation​

The business is a true social enterprise not only benefitting the user, but also enriching communities engaged in the manufacture of pottery, charcoal and cast iron whilst helping the country save on foreign exchange.
As consumer confidence grew, the Stove was recognized by various government and scientific institutions awarding many prestigious accolades including a
National Award for Science and Technology granted by the President of Sri Lanka, All Island Innovation award by The University of Moratuwa, many grants and awards by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and recognition by the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) at the Technological Awards.
The EZ Turbo Charcoal Stove’s popularity also prompted the innovation of an Industrial version of the Stove, specifically aimed at aiding the local food processing industry manage the cost of producing food.
